Robert Nodes was first mate aboard SS Vesuvio which, on 6th April, 1916, hit a mine just off Beachy Head in the English Channel and sank. Seven of her crew lost their lives. Robert Nodes however died 12 days later from acute laryngitis but somewhat curiously he is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, for merchant seamen lost at sea. As yet there is no explanation for this. |
